Ganges-Padma River System one of the three major river systems of Bangladesh. The bengal delta[1] occupies a unique position among the larger deltas of the world for its varied and complex river and drainage system[2]. The whole delta is criss-crossed by innumerable large and small channels of which some are decaying, some are active, while some others are being drained only by the tidal flow. In the northeastern part of the delta there are some abandoned or partially abandoned courses of decaying rivers while the eastern and southeastern delta is characterised by the flow of active rivers[3] with heavy discharges. The southwestern portion of the Ganges delta, which includes the worlds largest mangrove forest, the sundarbans[4], is completely a maze of tidal creeks and channels[5].
